Hikurangi Historical Museum

A local museum about the history of Hikurangi and the region.

Nau mai, haere mai

Welcome to the Hikurangi Museum

The Hikurangi Historical Museum is located within a precinct of historic buildings, including the original Hikurangi Courthouse, Jail and Council building. Our artefacts showcase Hikurangi’s early industries, particularly coal mining which made a significant contribution to Northland’s coal production – two thirds of which came from the mines at Hikurangi.

Our museum also presents the social, environmental, Māori and wider cultural histories of the area. A collection of old photographs, objects, tools, clothing, newspaper articles, and personal stories related to Hikurangi are exhibited.
