Museum history

The history of Hikurangi is woven from the stories of its people, its industries, and its unique place in the North. From the early days of coal mining and gum digging to the vibrant community that thrives today, the museum preserves and shares these chapters for future generations. Here you’ll find photographs, objects, and memories that connect us to the spirit of Hikurangi and the lives that built it.

Our values

Coal mining played a central role in shaping Hikurangi, bringing families, workers, and cultures together to form a strong and resilient community. The museum holds records, tools, and personal accounts that tell the story of these industries and the people who worked tirelessly underground and on the land.

Beyond industry, Hikurangi’s history is deeply connected to its schools, sports clubs, churches, and everyday life. The collection showcases the spirit of local whānau and the many ways people contributed to building a close-knit town, full of character and pride.

Today, the museum stands as a guardian of these stories, ensuring they are not forgotten. Each display invites visitors to step back in time, discover connections to their own heritage, and reflect on the unique journey that has shaped Hikurangi into the community it is today.

Strategic Plan

We realised that a plan is necessary to make sure the museum reflects the diverse history of the whenua (land) and people of Hikurangi and surrounding areas. It identifies the main focus of the museum and a framework timeline to help keep the museum on track. 

It will also help to show others what we are doing and hopefully this will generate more support.

The Hikurangi Museum is run by volunteers. Without their amazing work we couldn’t exist. If you want to become part of our team please contact us. Every help is welcome!

You can also be a member of the museum. The membership fee is just $10 per year.
